Pretorio and Torre rotonda
A dark past
Since 1526, the Pretorio (Latin for praetorium, or administrative building) served as the town hall, the seat of the criminal court for the entire valley, and the customs station and civil court for Sopra Porta (the upper part of Bregaglia). The round tower, visible from afar, was built in the 13th century and housed the prisons. To this day, visitors can view the instruments of torture that were once used there. In the nearby clearing of Cudin, the macabre pillars of the gallows where those convicted of witchcraft were executed still stand today. A guided tour will teach you more about the history, culture and customs of the valley.
